Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWDs) are critical tools for pavement condition assessment, providing valuable insights into pavement distress and structural integrity. However, to ensure accurate and reliable measurements, regular maintenance and calibration of FWDs are essential.
Maintenance Proper maintenance of the falling weight deflectometer involves regular inspection, cleaning, and lubrication of its components, including: Load Cell: Ensure the load cell is properly secured and free from damage. Inspect the cables and connectors for secure connections and signs of wear or damage. Deflection Sensors: Clean the deflection sensors regularly to remove dirt and debris that could affect their accuracy. Verify that the cables are properly connected and free of damage. Data Acquisition System: Check the data acquisition system for proper operation and functionality. Regularly update firmware and software to ensure compatibility with new features and calibration procedures. Transducer Cables: Inspect the transducer cables for signs of wear, tear, or damage, especially at the connector ends. Replace damaged cables immediately to maintain signal integrity. External Storage Devices: Back up data regularly to external storage devices to prevent data loss or corruption. Ensure the storage devices are compatible with the FWD's data acquisition system. Calibration Calibration is the process of verifying and adjusting the accuracy of the FWD's load cell and deflection sensors. It ensures that the deflection measurements are precise and representative of the actual pavement condition. Relative Calibration: Relative calibration involves comparing the FWD's load cell and deflection sensors to a reference device under controlled conditions. This is typically performed monthly or within 42 days of testing if the FWD is used regularly. Reference Calibration: Reference calibration involves sending the FWD to a certified calibration centre equipped with specialized equipment. This type of calibration is typically performed annually or as specified by state or local regulations. Frequency of Maintenance and Calibration The frequency of maintenance and calibration depends on the usage and condition of the FWD. For FWDs used regularly, monthly relative calibration and annual reference calibration are recommended. For FWDs used less frequently, quarterly relative calibration and bi-annual reference calibration may be sufficient. Documentation Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance and calibration activities. This includes dates, technicians involved, equipment used, and any findings or discrepancies noted. These records provide valuable documentation for troubleshooting issues and ensuring the FWD's continued accuracy and reliability.
